Valentine Blogger

Wow! Well one of my goals for the year is to maintain this blog more frequently. That won't be difficult as I started it last year and only made the one post which was almost exactly a year ago, around Valentine's Day. I'm not thrilled about my template and need to tweak to develop my own unique style, but I don't want another year to go by so I'm just going to go for it.

Valentine's Day is coming up. I have included a photo from a series of jewellery I made called, Sew Up Your Heart. These hammered sterling silver hearts have a dark patina, a gash and a neat silver wire stitch. There are earrings, a bracelet and a number of pendants. One necklace has an intact heart, a broken heart and a mended heart. Making these pieces was very therapeutic for me as I had my own broken heart and was adjusting to being on my own again. Mending one's heart doesn't have to be about the loss of a an intimate relationship. It's acknowledgement around disappointment then allowing one's self to heal which will foster new growth.

So this year Valentine's Day for me is not about focusing on a person or a hurt. I want to celebrate my passions as a maker. I love making: things grow in my garden, jewellery, knitting, cooking, fires, mosaics, funky outfits, stories, friends and people laugh. Share your passions with your community and the ones you love.

Found objects such as antique mother-of-pearl buttons from the bottom of a forgotten sewing basket remain a constant source of inspiration. Natural materials like porcupine quills, seeds and shells transform under Erin's fingers into ethnic organic pieces.
Erin predominately works with sterling silver wire, beads and semi-precious stones. She describes her work as eclectic and funky, jewellery that feeds the eye and fuels the spirit.
